Global Surgical Training is a non-profit (registration pending) building global capacity in women's health.Our primary work involves providing surgical training from world-leading surgeons to hospitals in low-resource settings, including in Laparoscopy, Vaginal Surgery, Hysteroscopy and Fistula Surgery, thereby decreasing maternal morbidity and mortalityIn conjunction, we are establishing a Fellowship in Gynecologic Surgery and Global Women’s Health in conjunction with Columbia University Medical Center with a focus on the surgical training skills necessary to provide adequate clinical and surgical support abroadLearn more about us or get in touch.

Who We Are

HELAI HESHAMAs an Afghan refugee who is now a fellowship trained, boarded female pelvic reconstructive surgeon focusing on minimally invasive surgery for women, I have always felt passionate about helping global health systems, particularly battling women's morbidity and mortality within gynecology.Since 2017, I have taught and worked across the world in Malawi, Sierre Leone, Afghanistan, Tanzania, South Africa and Guatemala. In 2025, I started Global Surgical Training with my colleague Esther Han to improve access to surgical techniques which improve women's health.

ESTHER HANI am a first generation immigrant, first generation college graduate, and now a board-certified OB-GYN and fellowship trained complex benign gynecologic surgeon.Since completing my training, I have focused mainly on teaching laparoscopy and hysteroscopy through simulation activities and intraoperative hands-on training in Guatemala and Tanzania.I am passionate about expanding access to minimally invasive gynecologic surgery in limited resource settings around the world.
